BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid BMW EfficientDynamics ActiveHybrid technology from BMW
The new concept car offers a particularly good rendition of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan in all its dynamic, efficient and innovative qualities, at the same time representing the ongoing development of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 with their drivetrain technology already in production.
The drive system featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid consists of a straight-six gasoline engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, eight-speed automatic transmission, and electric drive. Integration of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a sedan already extremely efficient with its “conventional” combustion engine reduces both fuel consumption and emissions once again by more than 10 per cent. At the same time the electric motor offers a boost function, supporting the gasoline engine in generating particularly dynamic drive power for an even more sporting driving experience in the car.
Intelligent energy management likewise serves to enhance the efficiency of the overall system, its unique functions ensuring appropriate control and management of all energy paths within the car and appropriate interaction of the drivetrain components precisely adjusted to driving conditions.
The drivetrain technology featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid allows all-electric, zero-emission motoring in city traffic. At the same time a special hybrid-based Auto Start Stop function offers additional efficiency by consistently switching off the combustion engine when stopping at the traffic lights, a road junction, or in congested traffic. Optimised comfort, finally, is provided by the auxiliary climate control function already featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7.
Special development of ActiveHybrid technology as part of BMW EfficientDynamics.
The concept car based on the new BMW 5 Series Sedan for the first time presents the next generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, a special solution exclusive to BMW for intelligent interaction of the combustion engine and electric drive focused specifically on the requirements made of a dynamic sedan in the upper midrange segment.
Taking this approach, BMW is consistently continuing the development of hybrid technology according to a modular principle (best of hybrid), thus offering the optimum rendition of BMW ActiveHybrid technology for each concept and vehicle segment.
In accordance with the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, this ensures highly effective and practical use of hybrid technology for the reduction of both fuel consumption and emissions.
Also in the BMW Series Sedan segment: the BMW among hybrids combines supreme dynamics with maximum efficiency.
The combustion engine is supported in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid by an electrical drive system developed specifically for this model and arranged in compact dimensions between the straight-six combustion engine and the automatic transmission. Drawing its energy from a high-voltage battery at the back of the car, the electric motor develops maximum output of 40 kW. An automatic clutch connects the gasoline engine and the electric motors.
Due to the particularly high level of torque generated from the start through the electric motors, the interaction of the two drive systems ensures extremely spontaneous and dynamic acceleration whenever required.
Perfectly integrated, precisely controlled: high-voltage battery supplying power to both the electric motor and the on-board network.
In overrun and when applying the brakes, the electric drive systems acts as a generator developing electric power fed into the high-voltage battery. This converts kinetic energy otherwise wasted as heat in the brake system into electric power saved for subsequent use.
Such energy obtained without any further consumption of fuel may then be used to generate drive power or operate electrical functions in the car.
This principle is the same as that of Brake Energy Regeneration already applied in BMW’s current production models, with the level of electrical energy generated by the electric motor being significantly greater and the increase in efficiency correspondingly higher.
The high-voltage battery likewise developed for this specific concept is fitted within a high-strength special case near the rear axle of the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid. This leads to an optimum position in terms of both safety and harmonious weight distribution. An integrated control unit permanently analyses the charge status of the high-voltage battery and controls both the battery charge process by way of Brake Energy Regeneration and the system cooling process. Apart from the electric motor, the high-voltage battery also delivers electric power to the car’s on-board network. Among other things, this allows efficient operation of the car’s auxiliary climate control activated whenever required by a remote control function to cool down the car’s interior significantly even before starting the engine.
Convenient use of the all-electric driving mode and the Auto Start Stop function is likewise guaranteed in this way, with all electrical functions such as the audio system, climate control or navigation remaining fully available even with the combustion engine switched off.
Unique: intelligent energy management with advance analysis of driving conditions.
BMW ActiveHybrid technology provides its unique potential in terms of both efficiency and driving dynamics under all kinds of conditions and throughout a wide load range.
Unlike conventional hybrid cars whose extra efficiency is largely limited to city traffic, both the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, by combining the combustion engine and the electric motor, are able to offer significantly lower fuel consumption and emission ratings also at higher speeds. This is made possible by technically sophisticated power electronics masterminding the interaction of the combustion engine and electric motor and thus optimising the overall efficiency of the drive system as a whole.
The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid once again raises the range of functions provided by such power electronics to an even higher standard. As an example, the energy contained in the fuel and provided by the high-voltage battery may now be used even more specifically and efficiently to provide that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW.
Taking additional factors into account, the interaction of the two drive units in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid is tailored to the driver’s requirements and current driving conditions with maximum precision. At the same time the power electronics also control the operation of the car’s ancillary units and comfort functions, again in the interest of maximum efficiency.
The range and diversity of parameters taken into account by the system is indeed quite unique in the automobile, just as the number of functions controlled in this way. A high level of all-round networking allows the power electronics to provide intelligent energy management, thus optimising the operating strategy of the entire vehicle under all conditions.
A further unique feature of energy management in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid is the car’s ability to adjust its operating strategy not just to current, but also to upcoming driving conditions. To do this the power electronics from the start evaluate data indicating a possible change in exterior conditions or the driver’s wishes and prepare the components in the drivetrain as well as the car’s electronic system for a possible change in requirements.
To analyse driving conditions up front, the system uses data provided by engine and chassis management as well as the sensors in the driver assistance systems on board the car. Data saved in the navigation system on the route chosen by the driver likewise goes into the final calculation, enabling the system to forecast driving conditions on the route directly ahead. Then, proceeding from this analysis, the car is coordinated in advance and the optimum use of all systems serves to use the energy available with maximum efficiency.
Should the system determine, for example, that the autobahn ahead is about to lead downhill, the charge level of the high-voltage battery is intelligently controlled in advance to regain brake energy upfront with maximum efficiency.
Similarly, the high-voltage battery may be fully charged in good time before the driver reaches his destination, enabling the system to switch off the combustion engine at an early point and change to all-electric drive along the final stretch of road. Indeed, this forward-looking function is able to extend the cruising range on electric power by up to 30%.
The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid: the future of driving pleasure and efficiency in the upper midrange segment.
Optimised to an even higher standard in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid, the drivetrain and control systems underline the great significance of hybrid technology as a cornerstone of BMW EfficientDynamics. Looking at a new generation of hybrid technology from BMW featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid therefore offers particularly attractive perspectives, the ongoing development of BMW ActiveHybrid technology serving to provide substantial progress in all areas leading to a harmonious all-round concept with distinctive features typical of the brand.
The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid is therefore more dynamic, efficient and more intelligent than conventional representatives of this drive technology, standing out clearly as the BMW among hybrid cars in this segment.

New BMW Drivetrain technology announced for Detroit Motor Show.
The Detroit Auto Show, as it is commonly called, was held for the first time in 1907 as a regional event and has been a regular highlight of the international circuit of motor shows since 1987, representing the most significant annual event of its kind on the North American continent.
Apart from the world debut of the fascinating, ultra-sporting BMW Z4 sDrive35is, the press and public in Detroit will also experience the starting signal for new drivetrain technology at the Show from 16 – 24 January 2010: At the NAIAS 2010 BMW presents the models BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and BMW ActiveHybrid X6.
The first hybrids from BMW demonstrate impressively how much extra efficiency and driving dynamics a premium manufacturer such as BMW is able to offer through innovative technologies combining the combustion engine and electric drive.
Further proof of the brand’s innovative power is the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, a unique new model bringing together luxurious motoring comfort, superior variability and an elevated seating position to provide an unprecedented driving experience also benefiting from impressively low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions thanks to the wide range of technologies from BMW EfficientDynamics.
As the epitome of Sheer Driving Pleasure, the new BMW Z4 has made a great name for itself also in the North American automobile market within a very short time. This re-interpretation of the classic roadster with a retractable hardtop, seats moved back almost to the rear axle and a powerful straight-six engine is now entering a new dimension of driving dynamics: At the 2010 NAIAS BMW is proudly presenting the BMW Z4 sDrive35is featuring a Twin Turbo power unit with High Precision Injection for maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and peak torque of 450 Newton-metres/332 lb-ft.
In conjunction with seven-speed Sport Automatic transmission featuring double clutch operation now available in the Roadster for the first time in the USA, the BMW Z4 sDrive35is accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds.
Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, this significant increase in power, perfor-mance and driving dynamics comes without the slightest increase in fuel consumption. At 9.0 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 26.1 mpg US) and 210 grams CO2 per kilometre in the EU test cycle, both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are the same as on the BMW Z4 sDrive35i with regular Sport Automatic.
Following the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, the German manufacturer of premium cars offers a unique range of options and technologies giving customers from all over the world exactly the right models to enjoy new standards in terms of both driving dynamics and efficiency. Power units and transmissions with a supreme level of efficiency all round, technologies and features on the engine’s ancillary units likewise serving to enhance efficiency, optimised aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight technology help to provide a perfect symbiosis in all segments of the Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of the brand, on the one hand, with surprisingly low fuel consumption and emissions, on the other. And as a further cornerstone of BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW ActiveHybrid technology is now also about to enter the market.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is the first vehicle in the world to combine a V8 gasoline engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor as a mild-hybrid concept. This combination of an upgraded eight-cylinder with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection, on the one hand, and an electric motor, on the other, gives BMW ActiveHybrid 7 overall system output of 342 kW/465 hp and maximum torque of 700 Nm/516 lb-ft.
Power is conveyed to the wheels by an eight-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor positioned between the combustion engine and the converter on the automatic transmission, in turn, draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for automotive applications.
Precisely masterminded interaction of both power sources serves to optimise not only the supreme level of efficiency, but also the dynamic performance and motoring comfort offered by the BMW ActiveHybrid 7. Just one example is that the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 4.9 seconds, while making do on average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 9.4 litres/100 kilometres (24.9 mpg US) and restricting CO2 emissions to 219 grams per kilometre.
A further feature of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is the car’s Auto Start Stop function keeping idle periods when stopping at the traffic lights or in congested traffic to a minimum and thus preventing any superfluous consumption of fuel. For the first time the air conditioning and ventilation may still be operated even with the engine switched off, just as the energy management concept featured in this Luxury Performance Sedan provides the option to run the air conditioning even when the car is at a standstill.
Parallel to the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, BMW is also presenting BMW the Active Hybrid X6 at the 2010 NAIAS. The world’s first Sports Activity Coupe with full-hybrid drive capitalises on the options provided by the combination of the combustion engine and the electric motor to a degree never seen before. The vehicle’s drive system is made up of a 300 kW/407 hp V8 with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two synchronous electric motors developing maximum output of 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. The electric motors receive their energy from an NiMH high-performance battery positioned beneath the luggage compartment and also supplying power to the on-board network.
Maximum system output available in this case is 357 kW/485 hp, with torque peaking at 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. Precisely controlled interaction of the three drive units optimises the overall efficiency of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 at all speeds. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) comes in 5.6 seconds, top speed of BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is limited electronically to 236 km/h or 146 mph (250 km/h or 155 mph in conjunction with the optional Sports Package). Average fuel consumption in the EU5 test cycle, on the other hand, is just 9.9 litres/100 km (equal to 23.7 mpg US), CO2 emissions are 231 grams per kilometre.
BMW’s first full-hybrid is able to run on electric power alone up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph, that is without the slightest emission of CO2. The combustion engine cuts in automatically whenever required.
The two-mode active transmission serves to enhance the level of efficiency and driving dynamics by providing the ideal combination in each case of the two drive systems. Incorporating the two electric motors, three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches, the two-mode active transmission conveys the power of the drive system in the same way and with the same qualities as a seven-speed automatic transmission, intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology, in turn, spreading out power variably between the front and rear wheels.
BMW sets a new course with an innovative vehicle concept at the NAIAS 2010. Opening up a new segment never seen before, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines the essential features of a prestige Sedan, a modern Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo with one another. Stylish and elegant in its looks, this unprecedented four-door comes with frameless windows and a two-piece tailgate. The generous interior offers luxurious comfort, a slightly higher seating position for comfortable access and a superior overview of traffic conditions as well as a truly impressive range of variability.
Powerful but efficient engines, eight-speed automatic transmission featured as standard, Dynamic Driving Control also coming as standard, the most advanced suspension technology and innovative driver assistance systems interact with one another in the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo to ensure a truly unique driving experience. The 550i Gran Turismo, for example, is powered by a V8 featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo and High Precision Injection for maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp. The BMW 535i Gran Turismo, in turn, comes with a newly developed straight-six for the first time combining a turbocharger, direct gasoline injection, and fully variable VALVETRONIC valve management. Displacing 3.0 litres, the BMW TwinPower Turbo delivers maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp. And thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, both versions of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo offer a level of fuel economy and emission management simply outstanding in this segment and with this kind of performance.
The BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance technology offers yet another opportunity to enjoy Sheer Driving Pleasure at a low level of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
Featuring the BMW 335d Sedan and the BMW X5 xDrive35d as special variants of the six-cylinder diesel, BMW is focusing specifically on the challenges of the North American automobile market and is therefore promoting this drive technology in continuing its worldwide entry into the marketplace. Developing maximum output of 265 hp, the power unit featuring Variable Twin Turbo Technology and common-rail direct fuel injection also offers an unprecedented cruising range on the road. And equipped with a diesel particulates filter, an oxidation catalyst, and SCR Selective Catalytic Reduction to reduce the level of nitric oxides (NOX) to a minimum, the new model meets the emission standards now in force even in the strictest States in the USA.
A wide range of options pointing into the future for enjoying Sheer Driving Pleasure of the highest standard – precisely this is the highlight of the model range and other innovations presented by BMW, the German premium car maker, at the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, has raised the technological bar to previously unseen levels. Showcasing new advanced hybrid-drive technology, BMW’s trademark lightweight body construction and an ultra-aerodynamic design, the Vision EfficientDynamics concept delivers M3-rivalling performance with the fuel economy and the low running costs of a small car.
BMW’s latest concept is powered by a new diesel-electric hybrid system, a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine working in tandem with two electric motors. The unique combination allows the Vision EfficientDynamics to accelerate to 60mph in just 4.8 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, while returning a combined consumption of 75.1mpg and emitting a mere 99g/km CO2.
Capable of running on either the electric motors for up to 31 miles or the diesel engine for 400 miles, the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car is also capable of combining both power sources. The onboard management system can utilise the power from all three sources when short bursts of speed are required, such as when overtaking or accelerating from junctions. The resultant design is more than merely efficient; the floating rear LED lights, transparent roof and dramatic glass panel gull wing doors are sure to turn heads.
The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is practical too; those doors allow access to two rear seats, which can be tilted forwards to increase storage space in the boot. A new thermo-electric generator (originally developed for use on spacecraft) situated in the exhaust even creates its own electricity from the car’s exhaust gases to power the air conditioning, electronic seat adjustment and power steering.
Now the discerning customer has the opportunity to enjoy the unique high-performance character of a BMW M car also in the segment of BMW X models: The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the supreme performance, dynamic driving features, athletic design, and premium quality of a typical BMW M Car.
Both models are powered by a newly developed V8 high-performance engine delivering 408 kW/555 hp at an engine speed range between of 6,000 rpm from an engine capacity of 4,395 cc. The new M TwinPower Turbo engine is indeed the world’s first power unit with a common exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders and featuring Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology.
BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system is naturally geared to the specific power and performance characteristics of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, just like Dynamic Performance Control also standard on both models. Interacting with the cars’ special M suspension including Adaptive Drive and the newly developed Servotronic power steering, this ensures the driving behaviour so characteristic of a BMW M Car, combining unique driving stability with precisely controlled steering qualities all the way to the highest level of driving dynamics.
The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M set new standards in this segment of high-performance models in terms of acceleration, lateral dynamics, steering behaviour, stopping power, and efficiency. Both models accelerate to 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.7 seconds and stand out not only through the truly impressive delivery of power by the V8 turbo engine providing maximum torque of 680 Newton-metres or 501 lb-ft in the broad speed range between 1,500 and 5, 650 rpm, but also through the likewise smooth and consistent build-up of lateral forces meeting the highest requirements and the most dynamic level of performance in bends.

As a group we welcome ideas and opportunities to assist our local community. In August 2008, design student Manmeet Auluck approached Vines for help with a 2nd year A level project, to design and build a model car showroom. Having been turned down by other dealerships, upholding the Vines values to be positive and supportive, coupled with a desire to promote creativity through BMW, we were really keen to assist Manmeet with his project.
Offering BMW Communications Identity guidance from HR Manager Sue White and Guildford Dealer Principal Mark Hollands, but allowing him artistic license Manmeet was able to create a bespoke showroom design (featured). Both Sue and Mark met with Manmeet on several occasions to review his process and see the progression of the project through from an ideas board and drawings, to the finished piece.
Since completion of the project this year, Manmeet has gained full marks and has hopes to study architecture at university later this year.
Congratulations go to Manmeet for doing such a great job.

One of the world’s largest ownership surveys names BMW as most reliable marque 900,000 drivers place three BMW Group cars in the top ten BMW wins three more awards for EfficientDynamics
BMW’s biggest selling model range, the 3 Series, has been voted the most reliable car in a survey of Britain’s vehicle leasing companies. The poll, which covered the reliability history of nearly 900,000 vehicles in 2008, also revealed that BMW was the most reliable manufacturer overall.
In an historic win over the Japanese car manufacturers who traditionally dominate in reliability surveys, BMW topped the charts in this year’s annual FN50 reliability survey. The BMW 3 Series was the most rated model for reliability, with the MINI hatch and BMW 1 Series also making the top ten, sitting fifth and seventh most reliable respectively.
The survey compiled by Fleet News looked at multi-marque leasing companies. 881,000 cars were assessed according to the number of breakdowns per 100 of each type of model on each leasing company’s fleet. Points were then awarded according to the number of times that brands or particular models appeared in the tables supplied by the leasing firms and also for the position in which they were placed.
BMW honoured for EfficientDynamics News of BMW’s success in the FN50 reliability survey comes swiftly after the marque won a trio of important environmental awards in recognition of its EfficientDynamics technologies.
The Energy Saving Trust staged the 2008 Fleet Hero Awards to idenitify companies that have gone to impressive lengths to cut down on fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. BMW was announced the winner in the ‘Industry supplier’ category for the introduction of EfficientDynamics. Meanwhile, BMW picked up two awards in the GreenFleet Awards 2008. The marque was presented with ‘Car Manufacturer of the Year’ in honour of its innovative engineering solutions to modern day motoring issues and ‘Green Marketing Campaign of the Year’ for its accurate and effective promotion.

It is the epitome of sporty flair in its segment and for years it has maintained the leading position as the mostly widely sold premium vehicle in the world.
Now the BMW 3 Series sets out to extend its lead even further. Specific design modifications, a further refined interior design, the new generation of the optional operating concept BMW iDrive, new services provided by BMW ConnectedDrive, a revised range of engines and innovations in the areas of drive technology, safety and comfort make both the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and the new BMW 3 Series Touring more attractive than ever before. With rear-wheel drive, harmonious axle load distribution, outstanding steering precision and highly sophisticated chassis technology, the BMW 3 Series sets unsurpassed standards for driving dynamics in its segment. More than ever before, this unique driving pleasure can now be combined with an awareness of economy and minimised pollutant emissions. Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics the new BMW 3 Series achieves significantly lower fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels with each of the ten engine variations available than those of the relevant competitors in the premium segment.
The new features in the powertrain field include the further optimised electronically controlled all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. This intelligent all-wheel drive system which variably distributes the drive force between front and rear wheels to enhance driving dynamics as well as ride stability and traction can now be combined with five engine types. The new BMW 320d xDrive is available as a Saloon and Touring model. Another new feature for both body versions: the BMW 318d – by far the most efficient vehicle of its category with an average fuel consumption of just 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres – is now also available with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Parallel to the market launch of the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and the new BMW 3 Series Touring, a new 7-speed sports automatic transmission with double clutch will be presented for the Coupé and the Convertible of the series. This allows further improved acceleration figures in the models BMW 335i Coupé and BMW 35i Convertible, and combines this added dynamic performance – as compared to the standard 6-speed manual transmission – with the comfort features of an automatic transmission. The 7-speed sports automatic transmission with double clutch shifts without interrupting traction.
New design accentuations for a sporty, elegant appearance. With striking design accentuations to the front section, the side perspective and the rear, the dynamic character of the new BMW 3 Series Saloon has been given additional emphasis, while the new BMW 3 Series Touring enhances its sporty, elegant profile with new visual features which are recognisable from all perspectives.
Front section with bold shapes and an emphasis of width. The front view of the Saloon and Touring models of the new BMW 3 Series is characterised by a clear emphasis of vehicle width. The characteristic brand look of the double circular headlights is underscored by means of chrome tubes, and their corona rings can now also be used in the BMW 3 Series Saloon and the Touring model with optional bi-xenon headlamps as daytime running lights. The light sources of the direction indicators have a ribbed structure and LED direction indicator lights are installed in conjunction with the optional bi-xenon headlamps.
Side view with elegantly elongated lines. Powerfully taut surfaces and striking character lines dominate the side view of the new BMW 3 Series. The contour edges of the side skirts have been set higher and modelled in a more distinctive fashion. Another new feature is the exterior mirrors with two distinctive character lines, echoing the interplay between the convex and concave shaping of the surfaces. The mirrors also offer an enlarged field of vision.
The rear: sporty and tight with a new lighting design. Greater emphasis of the vehicle’s power and sporty character likewise characterises the rear view of the new BMW 3 Series. To achieve this effect, the rear bumpers, rear lights and luggage compartment handle have been completely redesigned. The dual section rear lights are now structured according to the characteristic BMW L shape. The two LED rear light clusters and the direction indicators in LED technology are designed to create a striking, high-quality appearance. The widened track of the new BMW 3 Series especially contributes to its powerful appearance. Depending on the model, the track of the rear axle has been widened by up to 24 millimetres by means of a new wheel carrier and other modified details.
High-quality materials and optimised ergonomics in the interior. The modern, high-quality interior of the BMW 3 Series has been further enhanced by means of specific modifications in the selection of materials and surface design. Here the modern design concept is also applied, with its convex-concave surfaces, sporty elegance and technology-oriented aesthetic style.
Premiere for the new generation of the operating concept BMW iDrive. The operating system BMW iDrive is optionally available in the new BMW 3 Series for the activation and control of entertainment, information, navigation and telecommunications functions, whether standard or optional. The new generation of iDrive is available in conjunction with the optional navigation system Professional. What is more, the new iDrive supports multi-mode operation by voice entry. With the new iDrive generation, BMW extends its lead over comparable systems made by other manufacturers in terms of display quality and intuitive operation. Using the four direct selection buttons grouped around the Controller, it is especially easy to switch spontaneously between CD, radio, telephone and navigation functions. The functional bookmarks are supplemented with three control buttons.
Control Display with high-resolution graphics and variable layout. The new iDrive in the BMW 3 Series is presented with a 8.8 inch Control Display whose dimensions surpass all graphic displays available to date in the automobile field. With its high image resolution it offers significant improve-ment in the display of detailed graphics. The structure of the user menu also makes it easier to locate desired functions. All functions controllable by iDrive are listed in the starter menu.
Hard drive for audio files and navigation system. The features of the navigation system Professional include a hard drive integrated in the vehicle. The storage medium with a capacity of 80 GB provides outstandingly fast access to digital maps for navigation purposes and can also be used for an extensive collection of music files. The system enables music files to be transferred to the hard drive from a CD, MP3 player or USB stick.
World premiere for unlimited internet use inside the vehicle. BMW ConnectedDrive makes BMW the first automobile manufacturer in the world to enable unlimited use of the internet inside the vehicle when stationary. Internet access is available for the new BMW 3 Series as a special equipment option at attractive flat rate conditions. The transfer of data is based on EDGE technology (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), which unlike UMTS offers full geographical coverage and is three to four times faster than the mobile phone standard GPRS. The basis for internet use in the vehicle is provided by the further developed functions of iDrive. By pushing the Controller in different directions, the mouse can be moved across the web page shown in the Control Display.
BMW ConnectedDrive with extended range. As a dynamic concept, BMW ConnectedDrive offers the products BMW Assist, BMW Online, BMW TeleServices and BMW Tracking, depending on the country in question. At the same time BMW ConnectedDrive is designed for the ongoing further development of services to increase mobility and information convenience. The Enhanced Emergency Call with automatic positioning and remote control functions are examples of safety-related options which are already available, extending the lead of BMW ConnectedDrive over the competition.
The new BMW 3 Series: the engine of success for BMW EfficientDynamics. With its further optimised engine range, the new BMW 3 Series further extends its leading position in the segment in terms of driving dynamics and economy. With all engine types, both the Saloon and the Touring model boast superior fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels than those of their competitors of comparable output.
Depending on the model-specific constellation, the new BMW 3 Series features the latest measures for increased efficiency. All petrol and diesel engines available for the new BMW 3 Series represent the state of the art in engine development. What is more, an extremely wide spectrum of efficiency-promoting measures has been applied within the engine environ-ment so as to further reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
This includes Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start/Stop Function, Shift Point Display, the needs-oriented control of auxiliary units, electro-mechanical power steering, tyres with reduced rolling resistance and Automatic Air Intake Flaps. With the comprehensive application of these technologies in what is the most successful BMW model series in terms of sales figures, the development strategy BMW EfficientDynamics achieves an especially broad impact.
New 6-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW 330d. In accordance with BMW EfficientDynamics, every new BMW offers increased driving dynamics in combination with reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels as compared to its respective predecessor model. An especially striking example of this is the BMW 330d. Its 3.0 litre all-aluminium engine has common rail injection of the third generation, whose piezo injectors operate at a pressure or up to 1,800 bar, and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The new diesel engine achieves its maximum output of 180 kW/245 bhp at an engine speed of 4,000 rpm, while its maximum torque of 520 Nm is available from 1,750 to 3,000 rpm. The new BMW 330d accelerates in 6.1 seconds from zero to 100 km/h, its maximum speed is electronically cut off at 250 km/h. The average fuel consumption of the new BMW 330d according to the EU test cycle is 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres, its CO2 level is 152 grams per kilometre.
BMW BluePerformance technology: prepared for the exhaust gas norm EU 6. The new BMW 330d is fitted as standard with a diesel particulate filter and an oxidation catalytic converter. Thanks to the innovations applied to the new 6-cylinder engine, it significantly undercuts the thresholds set for the exhaust gas norm EU 5. In the oxidation catalytic converter, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are converted to water and carbon dioxide. For further reduction of nitrogen oxides in exhaust emissions, a NOX-storage catalytic converter can be integrated in the exhaust gas treatment system of the new 6-cylinder diesel engine, in addition to the oxidation catalytic converter. In the optional configuration with BMW BluePerformance technology, the new BMW 330d even meets the requirements for classification according to the future exhaust gas norm EU 6. Like the new BMW 6-cylinder diesel engines, the engines of the models BMW 320d and BMW 318d also meet the requirements of the exhaust gas norm EU 5 as standard. Their 4-cylinder diesel engines have been modified in a number of details, and the further reduction of exhaust emission levels has been implemented so as to have no impact on fuel consumption and the acoustic properties of the engines.
Engine selection: the greatest variety and highest level of efficiency in the segment. The ideal combination of driving fun and efficiency also characterises the other engines available for the new BMW 3 Series. Spontaneously responding, high-torque 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder diesel engines, powerful and high-revving 4-cylinder petrol engines and the 6-cylinder in-line petrol engine well-known for its unique refinement and dynamic power delivery form a portfolio which is unequalled in the segment of the BMW 3 Series.
With five petrol engines and five diesel engines, the new BMW 3 Series offers the most extensive range in its segment. When it comes to both petrol and diesel power units, customers have the choice of four 4-cylinder and three 6-cylinder engines. The output range extends from 105 kW/143 bhp in the 4-cylinder models BMW 318i and BMW 318d to a 225 kW/306 bhp in-line 6-cylinder engine in the BMW 335i. All engines are available for both the BMW 3 Series Saloon and the Touring model, and all are combined with the latest BMW EfficientDynamics measures in the environment of the engine, as suits the specific model configuration. Each of the ten engine types thus has a more favourable relationship between driving dynamics and economy as compared to competitor vehicles of similar output.
As one of a number of features which are unique within the competitive field, all petrol engines are fitted with High Precision Injection and all diesel engines combine an all-aluminium crankcase, turbo charging and common rail direct injection of the third generation. The BMW 335i is especially dynamic, accelerating in just 5.6 seconds from zero to 100 km/h. The outright leader in terms of efficiency in the entire vehicle segment is the BMW 318d with an average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres and a CO2 emission level of 123 grams per kilometre.
Optimised all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive – now for the BMW 320d xDrive too. The new BMW 3 Series also presents a further expanded selection of engine types for combination with the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. For the first time it is possible to fit 4-cylinder models of this series with xDrive. The new BMW 320d xDrive combines outstanding efficiency with superior properties in terms of driving dynamics and traction. Both for the Saloon and the Touring of the new BMW 3 Series it is now possible to combine three petrol engines and two diesel engines with the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. The models in question now bear the designations BMW 335i xDrive, BMW 330i xDrive, BMW 325i xDrive, BMW 330d xDrive and BMW 320d xDrive.
The electronically controlled permanent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive offers an incomparable level of comfort, traction and agility over all surfaces due to its flexible distribution of drive torque between the front and rear axles. In order to ensure especially precise control, the computer unit of the drive stability regulation system Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and that of xDrive are networked with each other in the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM). With these capabilities, xDrive supports driving dynamics because it identifies any tendency to oversteer or understeer early on and counteracts effectively.
Superior chassis technology, Active Steering as an option. The new BMW 3 Series has the most sophisticated chassis technology in its segment. At the rear axle there is a five-link construction which is adapted to the needs of the especially high-power and high-torque engines. The front axle of the BMW 3 Series also reflects a unique standard of engineering. The dual-arm tension strut axle with stabiliser is largely made of aluminium. The standard equipment also includes an electro-mechanical steering system with integrated Servotronic function for speed-related steering support. Active Steering is also optionally available: here, steering transmission is adapted to road speed.
Optimised occupant protection with crash-active headrests. The safety concept of the new BMW 3 Series is based on a solid body structure, the selective application of high-strength steel types and special deformation elements which divert and absorb impact energy. In addition there are six airbags, 3-point automatic belts and headrests on all seats to offer occupants optimum protection. What is more, ISOFIX children’s seat mounts on the rear seats are a standard feature. The front seats of the new BMW 3 Series are fitted as standard with crash-active headrests which significantly reduce the risk of injury to the cervical spine in the event of an impact. Controlled by the vehicle’s safety electronics system, this feature ensures that in the event of a rear-on collision the front section of the headrest is moved forward by up to 60 millimetres and upwards by as much as 40 millimetres. This reduces the distance between headrest and head, thus increasing the stabilising and securing function of the headrest.
A contribution to active safety is made by the new generation of adaptive headlight, optionally available in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps. It guarantees llumination of the road surface when taking a corner. Here the swivel direction of the headlamps is derived from the steering angle, the yaw rate and the road speed of the vehicle. At low speeds the turning light is activated. This function is performed by one of the two inside headlamps, depending on the direction. Before each turning manoeuvre, the light cone is turned specifically in the appropriate direction to illuminate the road ahead.
Best heating and climate comfort in the segment. In the area of comfort fittings, too, the new BMW 3 Series has a range of optimised features to offer. The further developed heating and air conditioning technology ensures that the interior maintains the desired temperature throughout the year. The new BMW 3 Series has the most high-performance heating and cooling system in its category. Within one minute the entire interior air volume can be completely exchanged three times. In spite of the outstandingly high air through-flow rate, excellent acoustics are ensured by means of a flow optimisation function in the unit and its feed lines and by means of an air outlet positioned at the centre of the instrument panel. A 2-zone air conditioning system is optionally available with individual temperature controls for the driver and front passenger.
