Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2010: the place to be for perfection and elegance
For anyone with a fondness for spring and an appreciation of the Italian way of life, Lake Como in April has always been hard to beat. And the world-famous Grand Hotel Villa d’Este is the perfect base for those looking to revel in the lakeside ambience rather than merely bed down for the night. Should the same people also share a love of fine cars, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will deliver the perfect weekend. All of which means that the dates 23 – 25 April are likely to have been among the first in any auto enthusiast’s diary.
This will be the 12th time that the automotive beauty contest has been held under the patronage of the BMW Group. “We are very proud that, working with the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, we have made the Concorso one of the world’s top classic car events,” said Karl Baumer, President of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and Director of BMW Group Classic. Dr Jean-Marc Droulers, President of Villa d’Este S.p.A., also underlined the importance of the event for his company: “The Concorso offers an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. The manufacturers focused on professionalism, flawlessness and elegance when it came to building their cars, and we’re following a similar blueprint with the Concorso.”
BMW’s Italian job
The relationship between BMW and Italy is by no means limited to the Concorso. This year sees the 70th anniversary of one of the greatest moments in the history of BMW Motorsport: victory in the 1940 Mille Miglia. The hero of the day 70 years ago was the BMW 328. Just 464 examples of the Roadster were built over the four years from 1936 to 1940, but that was enough to put the wind up its rivals. A racing version of the 328 made its debut in the legendary Italian car race in 1938 – and filled the top four places in its class at the first attempt. BMW lined up for the final pre-war edition of the race two years later with a pair of 328 Coupés and three Roadster versions, for which a new and ultra-lightweight streamlined body had been developed. In the battle to shed the seconds, its head-turning contours successfully reduced aerodynamic drag and shaped the path of automotive design for decades to come. The BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé secured the brand its greatest triumph to date. Drivers Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer posted an average speed of 166.723 km/h on the way to securing overall victory in the race, and the coveted team prize also went to BMW. “Before we head to the Mille Miglia we will put all of our Mille Miglia cars on display to the public in a special exhibition at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. You could call it a team presentation,” said Karl Baumer, whetting the appetite for the planned BMW showcase at the Concorso.
As always, the BMW Group Classic cars will appear hors concours. The selecting committee has picked out 52 beautiful models from six decades of automotive history for the event on the banks of Lake Como. They will be entered in seven different classes. In his capacity as Selecting Adviser, Urs Paul Ramseier is responsible for choosing the cars that will take part in the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. In Geneva, he offered a foretaste of some of the treasures in store among the elite field of entrants.
Jaguar XKC 120, 1952
The Jaguar C-Type – C for Competition – was a two-seater sports car designed for racing. It was developed in 1951 around the improved Jaguar XK 120 engine, a 3,442 cc six-cylinder unit producing 200 bhp. That was enough to power the car to over 230 km/h. The C-Type celebrated victory on its race debut in May 1951, the pairing of Peter Walker/Peter Whitehead winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car which will be on display at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2010 is the first which was delivered to the United States in 1952 and it was driven by the Formula 1 world champion Phil Hill at different races. The Jaguar will be shown in Europe the first time after it left England almost fifty years ago.
Talbot-Lago, T150 C SS Goutte d’Eau, 1938
The takeover of the Talbot factory in 1935 by Italian Antony Lago marked the dawn of a new era. Indeed, it wasn’t long before the brand was attracting international attention, notably after its victory in the 1937 French Grand Prix. The new T150 C SS race chassis delivered exceptional performance and reportedly provided the basis for 14 teardrop-shaped bodies built by renowned Paris coachbuilders Figoni & Falaschi. The car which will be on display at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2010 was ordered by Duke Philippe de Massa in autumn 1938 with aluminium bodywork, a sunroof and a rear window which could be opened. In 1939 it was piloted by the driver pairing of Philippe de Massa and Norbert Mahé at Le Mans. Unfortunately the number 8 car was forced to retire on its 88th lap while running ninth. The current owner bought the Talbot-Lago at auction in the USA in 2006, and its appearance at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2010 will be the first time since restoration that it has gone on display in Europe.
BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster Series 1, 1937
After topping its class at Le Mans and the Mille Miglia in 1939, the BMW 328 roared to overall and team victory in the Mille Miglia a year later, securing its legendary status as an all-conquering racing car. One incarnation of the 328 was the series 1 BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster. Also known as the “Trouser Crease” Roadster, it was built as a series production model in 1937 but wrapped up victory in its class at the 1938 Mille Miglia with only a handful of modifications carried out to the standard specification. In 1939 BMW decided to completely rebuild the car for the following year’s Mille Miglia. The chassis and frame were retained, but this time provided the basis for a totally new racing sports car body. The result was a racing concept which broke new ground with its aluminium body and aerodynamic form. The open-top racing car owes it nickname “Trouser Crease” to the distinctive ridge running over the top of its fenders. After the war, the Roadster found its way to Moscow and finally Latvia, before being acquired by a buyer in Germany in 2001.
Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Sport Pininfarina, 1965
Alfa Romeo presented the TZ (Tubolare Zagato) road-going racing car at the Turin Motor Show in 1962. A strict allegiance to lightweight design principles produced a tubular frame and aluminium body and brought the weight of the sports car – which borrowed the remainder of its technical make-up from the Giulia 1600 – down to well below 700 kg. Small-series production got under way in 1963 but came to an end in 1965 with only 102 Zagato-bodied examples made. Most TZ1s and TZ2s were subjected to a punishing and varied racing schedule, yet more often than not they finished well up the field. The car on show at the Concorso is a one-off example with a Pininfarina body which is based on the TZ2 like the Canguro by Bertone. This concept car was unveiled to the public for the first time at the 47th Turin Motor Show in 1965. Visitors will find this outstanding Alfa Romeo beautifully presented in its original condition and still with its original paintwork.
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2010
The weekend of 23 – 25 April 2010 will see the fabulous grounds of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este and Villa Erba in Cernobbio once again offering an exquisite stage for the most alluring classics of the past and the boldest concept cars of the present. The first Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este was held here on the banks of Lake Como in 1929, and today no other event of its kind can match its heritage and tradition.

New 2010 BMW M3 Competition Sports Package More Joy in top level performance from Vines BMW Group.
More driving pleasure, reduced emissions: this principle of the development strategy BMW EfficientDynamics applies equally at the very highest level of performance. As of spring 2010, the high-performance model BMW M3 consistently combines its outstanding driving performance figures with further reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels. The range of BMW EfficientDynamics measures fitted as standard in the models BMW M3 Coupé, BMW M3 Convertible and BMW M3 Saloon is now to be supplemented with the Auto Start Stop Function. This reduces the average fuel consumption and CO2 levels of the BMW M3 by up to 8 per cent or 24 grams of CO2 per kilometre. In order to further hone the outstandingly sporty profile of the model there will also be a Competition Package available as of spring 2010.
The range of driver assistance systems optionally available for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M will also be extended in spring 2010. Both models can now be fitted with the functions Side View and Speed Limit Info. The remainder of the BMW M GmbH portfolio will likewise feature new offers. Directly at the market launch of the new BMW X5, a newly configured M Sports Package will be available for the Sports Activity Vehicle. The new BMW 3 Series Coupé and the new BMW 3 Series Convertible can also be upgraded from the start with an M Sports Package. An M Sports Package, also designed for the specific model in question, is part of the equipment range of the BMW 3 Series Sedan and the BMW 3 Series Touring in the Edition Sport. For the launch of the Z4 sDrive35, the M Sports Package for the BMW Z4 is offered for all the other versions of the roadster, too. The BMW Individual range will also be further refined. Especially exclusive equipment options are already available at the market launch, also for the new BMW 5 Series Saloon.
Auto Start Stop Function for the BMW M3 - for the first time in conjunction with a dual clutch transmission.
The BMW M3 achieves its outstanding performance with impressive efficiency. Its 4.0 litre V8 high-revving engine mobilises 309 kW/420 bhp, enabling superior acceleration response due to its unique propulsion. In addition to its fascinating performance characteristics, the 8-cylinder engine - developed exclusively for the BMW M3 - is characterised by an unusually high degree of efficiency. Additional efficiency potential is now tapped into with the Auto Start Stop Function. This helps the drive avoid idling phases when stopping at junctions or in congested traffic. In order to prevent unnecessary fuel consumption the engine is switched off when the vehicle comes to a halt. As soon as the driver wishes to continue driving, the engine is re-activated without delay.
The Auto Start Stop Function is used both in vehicles with standard 6-speed manual transmission and in conjunction with the M dual clutch transmission with Drivelogic. The BMW M3 is thus the first model - along with the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 - to use this efficiency-enhancing measure in combination with an automated manual transmission.
The increase in efficiency brought about by the Auto Start Stop Function is up to 8 per cent of 24 grams of CO2 per kilometre, depending on the model and transmission type. For example, the BMW M3 Coupé with 7-speed M dual clutch transmission and Drivelogic powered by a V8 high-revving engine with 309 kW/420 bhp now achieves an average fuel consumption on the EU test cycle of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres (6-speed manual transmission: 12.4 litres). The same figures apply to the BMW M3 Sedan. In the case of the BMW M3 Convertible, the average fuel consumption is reduced to 11.5 litres (M dual clutch transmission with Drivelogic) or 12.7 litres (6-speed manual transmission) per 100 kilometres. All versions of the BMW M3 will also meet the exhaust emission norm EU5 in future.
Modified rear lights with glass covers in a homogeneous red colour provide an additional visual accentuation in the BMW M3 Coupé and the BMW M3 Convertible. With two harmoniously illuminating light banks fed by LED units, they create a characteristic nocturnal design.
New for the BMW M3: Competition Package and retrofit options.
The Competition Package, available for the Coupé and the Sedan, and the retrofit options from the range of Original BMW Accessories specially developed for the M3 are just two possible ways of individualising the sports car. With a suspension lowered by some 10 mm and light alloy wheels in the size 9 x 19 inches at the front and Y-spoke design at the rear, the Competition Package provides further optimised longitudinal and transverse dynamics. In addition, the control of the electronic damper adjustment function EDC including a Sport mode specially developed for the Competition Package has been precisely adjusted to the chassis modifications by means of map-based control and the driving stability control function DSC.
The new range of items from the Original BMW Accessories program available for the BMW M3 provides an even more intense driving experience. Retrofit options designed for this model are specifically geared towards increasing dynamic performance and driving pleasure. For example a rear spoiler and front apron flaps in carbon will be available from spring 2010. As well as perfectly matching the Competition Package the aerodynamically optimised components further reduce lift force, thereby increasing the driving dynamics potential of the BMW M3.
BMW M GmbH is a 100 per cent subsidiary of BMW AG. Based in Munich, the company was founded in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH. Since then, the letter M has become synonymous all over the world for success in motor racing and for the fascination of high-performance sports cars which can be used for everyday driving. The production of BMW M automobiles is integrated in the manufacturing processes of the BMW plants. BMW M GmbH has the status of an independent automobile manufacturer.
The new BMW X5 The original now with even greater supremacy.
More dynamic, efficient and luxurious than ever, the new BMW X5 continues to strengthen its leading position within the competitive environment of four-wheel driven premium vehicles. A completely revised range of engines, the standard eight-speed automatic transmission and innovative driver assistance systems ensure that the driving pleasure characteristic of the Sports Activity Vehicle offers even greater fascination. Specific design modifications authentically emphasise the enhanced sporting character. New exterior and interior colours as well as light-alloy wheels underline the vehicle’s exclusive style. Unsurpassed efficiency gives added quality to the BMW X5 that impresses both in terms of appearance as well as driving pleasure. In spite of significantly improved performance, fuel consumption and emission levels are up to 10 percent lower compared to its predecessor.
A new generation of engines also helps the BMW X5’s two diesel variants achieve a most favourable ratio between driving performance and fuel consumption. The BMW X5 xDrive40d’s all-aluminium straight six-cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo and Common Rail direct injection develops a maximum power output of 225 kW/306 bhp. In spite of a 15 kW higher output than its predecessor, average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle has been reduced by 0.8 percent to 7.5 litres/100 km. The new BMW X5 xDrive30d has an even lower average consumption. This six-cylinder diesel with an output increased by 7 kW to 180 kW/245 bhp is contented with 7.4 litres/100 km in the EU test cycle. All engines comply with the EU5 emission standard.
The ongoing advancement in the reduction of fuel consumption and emission levels is the result of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, which has been consistently implemented on all BMW X models.
Moreover, the innovative power of the world’s most successful premium car builder is also evident in the multiplicity of driver assistance systems, which are available for the new BMW X5 as part of BMW ConnectedDrive and are unique within the competitive environment. The BMW X5 is the only vehicle in its competitive segment that can be equipped with the Head-Up Display and the Surround View system. In addition, this Sports Activity Vehicle now offers a choice of Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info and Side View.
More than ever before, the BMW X5 offers superior and dynamic road performance. Thanks to the BMW xDrive intelligent four-wheel drive technology, it also offers supreme off-road qualities. This permanent four-wheel drive system, which comes as standard, ensures variable adjustment of drive torque between the front and rear axles. Its electronic control system and integrated DSC Dynamic Stability Control facilitate an unequalled rapid response to different driving situations. Every tendency for the vehicle to oversteer or understeer is immediately detected so that appropriate adjustments can be made to ensure stability before the driver even notices the necessity to intervene. In this way, iDrive is able to optimise in advance both driving dynamics and traction on slippery surfaces. The new BMW X5 features a modified version of this four-wheel technology. With a revised, more neutrally interpreted basic configuration, xDrive now contributes even more effectively towards an increase in driving dynamics.
With its distinctively contoured bonnet, large-sized BMW kidney grille and dual round headlights slightly cut off at the top, the new BMW X5 boasts a strikingly expressive front end that symbolises power and presence. The new interpretation of this look, which is characteristic of BMW X models, comprises in particular the structure of the front apron and the position of the fog lamps featured as standard. Due to an increased number of elements painted in matching body colour, the front end gives the impression of being nearer to the road surface. At the same time, the increased size of both the inner and the two outer air intakes indicates the boosted engine output. Hence, the newly conceived front end accentuates the BMW X5’s further enhanced sporting performance.
The black plastic trim at the bottom edge of the body is now considerably narrower. A matt-finished silver underride protection extending across the entire width of the middle air intake, thereby emphasising the muscular features of this Sports Activity Vehicle, additionally accentuates the new BMW X5’s robust character.
Together with the dual round headlights, fog lamps, which are now situated higher and closer to the BMW kidney grille, form a triangular design typical of BMW X models. The visual unity of light sources resulting from this configuration serves to symbolise a particularly intensive focus on the road. The new BMW X5’s headlight units strongly emphasise the exceptionally high quality. The technology-oriented structure of the cylinder-shaped light sources featured by the optional Xenon headlights is highlighted by a black matt-finished trim. Furthermore, LED corona rings serve as position lights and daytime driving lights. BMW’s characteristic daytime driving light design is distinctively enhanced by the bright white beam emitted by this light source.
The new BMW X5 is equipped as standard with the latest generation of the iDrive control system, whose 6.5-inch control display (or 8.8-inch display when ordered in conjunction with the navigation system Professional) is harmoniously integrated into the dashboard and ideally positioned for the driver. The onboard computer and the audio system as well as the navigation and communication functions are activated by tilting, turning and pressing the controller, which is located in the middle of the centre console. Direct selection buttons on the controller enable fast changing between CD, radio, telephone and navigation functions. The choice of direct selection buttons is supplemented by the three command buttons “MENU”, “BACK” and “OPTION”. In addition, the eight “favourite” buttons located on the centre console can be used to store and select radio stations, telephone numbers and navigation destinations or other menu items accessible via iDrive.
Besides a hard disk storage unit for digital maps and the personal music collection, the navigation system Professional also comprises multi-mode control of functions by voice entry and by the controller. The driver can choose between both forms of entry even while handling a specific task or operation, with voice entry as well as the controller remaining active at the same time for simultaneous use. Voice entry also facilitates direct access to stored music and the verbal entry of entire addresses.
A completely revised engine range ensures that the BMW X5 will continue to strengthen its leading role as the most dynamic vehicle in its segment. The choice of petrol engines now comprises a V8 and a straight six-cylinder power unit, both of which feature BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and direct fuel injection. In addition, two variants of the new generation of the BMW straight six-cylinder diesel engine are available. Both all-aluminium power units are turbocharged and utilise the latest Common Rail direct injection technology.
All power units available for the BMW X5 set the benchmark in sporting power development and efficiency in their respective engine class. They comply with the EU5 emission standard in Europe and with ULEV II in the USA respectively. Drive power of each engine is transferred via the standard eight-speed automatic transmission, whose outstanding efficiency also contributes towards a reduction of fuel consumption and emission levels.
All this is supplemented by BMW EfficientDynamics measures, the combination of which is adapted to suit each model. This technology, which also comes as standard, includes brake energy regeneration and demand-controlled ancillary components including the electric coolant pump, the electric power-steering pump, the map-controlled oil pump and the disengageable air conditioning compressor. Furthermore, the measures comprise intelligent lightweight construction, low-rolling resistance tyres and optimised aerodynamics including active air vent control. As a result of the comprehensive drive technology innovations and the consistent implementation of BMW EfficientDynamics, all versions of the new BMW X5 offer a ratio between vehicle performance and fuel consumption that is unrivalled in their respective competitive segments.
The diesel engines available for the new BMW X5 also originate from a new generation of power units. An all-aluminium construction, the latest Common Rail direct injection technology with piezo injectors and a turbocharger provide both 3-litre straight six-cylinder engines with impressive power, awesome running refinement and unparalleled efficiency. A further reduction in weight compared to each of their predecessors additionally enhances the agility of the diesel engine variants that are on offer for the BMW X5.
Above all, the new BMW X5 xDrive40d is characterised by exceptionally high performance qualities. Thanks to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and Common Rail direct injection, its power unit, which was first presented in the BMW 740d luxury saloon, delivers a maximum output of 225 kW/306 bhp at 4,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 600 Nm available between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. Torque of 450 Nm is already achieved at an engine speed of 1,000 rpm. More than 90 percent of maximum output is available within a range of 3,500 to 5,000 rpm. The new diesel has a maximum engine speed of 5,600 rpm.
The supercharging technology featured by the new high-performance diesel engine adheres to the Variable Twin Turbo principle. This means that initially, just above idling speed, a small charger is activated, with an additional larger charger being activated when higher torque is required. Spontaneous and consistent accelerating power allows the BMW X5 xDrive40d to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. Top speed is 236 km/h. Exceptionally sporty development of power is coupled with impressive efficiency. This is mainly due to the Common Rail technology, operating at a maximum pressure of 2,000 bar and guaranteeing an extremely accurately regulated fuel supply. The BMW X5 xDrive40d has an average fuel consumption of 7.5 litres/100 km in the EU test cycle and a CO2 emission level of 198 grams/km.
With its comprehensive range of standard equipment, which includes, among other features, automatic climate control, an audio system with CD drive and AUX In connection, a multifunction steering wheel, electrically operated front seat height and backrest adjustment, a rain sensor with integrated automatic headlight control and the iDrive control system, the new BMW X5 offers the driving and travelling comfort of a luxury-class premium vehicle. The comfort features also underline the high-quality and exclusive character of this Sports Activity Vehicle. In addition to the navigation system Professional, a CD changer and a USB audio interface, the available equipment includes a rear compartment entertainment system and a TV function for both analogue and digital television reception. The BMW Individual High End audio system offers maximum listening pleasure.
Moreover, the equipment range also includes 4-zone automatic climate control, active front seat ventilation, a heated steering wheel, a panorama glass roof, an electrically operated tailgate and an automatic soft-close function for all doors. The optional tow coupling for the new BMW X5 can be equipped with an electrically pivotable ball head. Maximum trailer load of the new BMW X5 is 3,500 kilograms.
The new BMW X5 embodies the consistent continuation of a successful vehicle concept with which BMW established the entirely new Sports Activity Vehicle segment in the year 1999. The BMW X5 continues to set the benchmark in driving dynamics in its competitive environment, combining more than ever before the fascinating driving experience offered by a BMW X model with outstanding efficiency. With new petrol and diesel engines, an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard and the xDrive intelligent four-wheel drive technology, it underlines the typical sporting character of BMW X models even more impressively. Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, it also achieves optimum results in terms of fuel consumption and emission levels, as clearly demonstrated by the BMW X5 xDrive30d’s extremely low fuel consumption of just 7.4 litres/100 km. This combination, its expressive design, innovative features and its premium character render the new BMW X5 the most supreme ambassador of its segment in every sense of the word.

New BMW Drivetrain technology announced for Detroit Motor Show.
The Detroit Auto Show, as it is commonly called, was held for the first time in 1907 as a regional event and has been a regular highlight of the international circuit of motor shows since 1987, representing the most significant annual event of its kind on the North American continent.
Apart from the world debut of the fascinating, ultra-sporting BMW Z4 sDrive35is, the press and public in Detroit will also experience the starting signal for new drivetrain technology at the Show from 16 – 24 January 2010: At the NAIAS 2010 BMW presents the models BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and BMW ActiveHybrid X6.
The first hybrids from BMW demonstrate impressively how much extra efficiency and driving dynamics a premium manufacturer such as BMW is able to offer through innovative technologies combining the combustion engine and electric drive.
Further proof of the brand’s innovative power is the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, a unique new model bringing together luxurious motoring comfort, superior variability and an elevated seating position to provide an unprecedented driving experience also benefiting from impressively low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions thanks to the wide range of technologies from BMW EfficientDynamics.
As the epitome of Sheer Driving Pleasure, the new BMW Z4 has made a great name for itself also in the North American automobile market within a very short time. This re-interpretation of the classic roadster with a retractable hardtop, seats moved back almost to the rear axle and a powerful straight-six engine is now entering a new dimension of driving dynamics: At the 2010 NAIAS BMW is proudly presenting the BMW Z4 sDrive35is featuring a Twin Turbo power unit with High Precision Injection for maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and peak torque of 450 Newton-metres/332 lb-ft.
In conjunction with seven-speed Sport Automatic transmission featuring double clutch operation now available in the Roadster for the first time in the USA, the BMW Z4 sDrive35is accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds.
Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, this significant increase in power, perfor-mance and driving dynamics comes without the slightest increase in fuel consumption. At 9.0 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 26.1 mpg US) and 210 grams CO2 per kilometre in the EU test cycle, both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are the same as on the BMW Z4 sDrive35i with regular Sport Automatic.
Following the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, the German manufacturer of premium cars offers a unique range of options and technologies giving customers from all over the world exactly the right models to enjoy new standards in terms of both driving dynamics and efficiency. Power units and transmissions with a supreme level of efficiency all round, technologies and features on the engine’s ancillary units likewise serving to enhance efficiency, optimised aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight technology help to provide a perfect symbiosis in all segments of the Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of the brand, on the one hand, with surprisingly low fuel consumption and emissions, on the other. And as a further cornerstone of BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW ActiveHybrid technology is now also about to enter the market.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is the first vehicle in the world to combine a V8 gasoline engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor as a mild-hybrid concept. This combination of an upgraded eight-cylinder with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection, on the one hand, and an electric motor, on the other, gives BMW ActiveHybrid 7 overall system output of 342 kW/465 hp and maximum torque of 700 Nm/516 lb-ft.
Power is conveyed to the wheels by an eight-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor positioned between the combustion engine and the converter on the automatic transmission, in turn, draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for automotive applications.
Precisely masterminded interaction of both power sources serves to optimise not only the supreme level of efficiency, but also the dynamic performance and motoring comfort offered by the BMW ActiveHybrid 7. Just one example is that the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 4.9 seconds, while making do on average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 9.4 litres/100 kilometres (24.9 mpg US) and restricting CO2 emissions to 219 grams per kilometre.
A further feature of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is the car’s Auto Start Stop function keeping idle periods when stopping at the traffic lights or in congested traffic to a minimum and thus preventing any superfluous consumption of fuel. For the first time the air conditioning and ventilation may still be operated even with the engine switched off, just as the energy management concept featured in this Luxury Performance Sedan provides the option to run the air conditioning even when the car is at a standstill.
Parallel to the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, BMW is also presenting BMW the Active Hybrid X6 at the 2010 NAIAS. The world’s first Sports Activity Coupe with full-hybrid drive capitalises on the options provided by the combination of the combustion engine and the electric motor to a degree never seen before. The vehicle’s drive system is made up of a 300 kW/407 hp V8 with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two synchronous electric motors developing maximum output of 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. The electric motors receive their energy from an NiMH high-performance battery positioned beneath the luggage compartment and also supplying power to the on-board network.
Maximum system output available in this case is 357 kW/485 hp, with torque peaking at 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. Precisely controlled interaction of the three drive units optimises the overall efficiency of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 at all speeds. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) comes in 5.6 seconds, top speed of BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is limited electronically to 236 km/h or 146 mph (250 km/h or 155 mph in conjunction with the optional Sports Package). Average fuel consumption in the EU5 test cycle, on the other hand, is just 9.9 litres/100 km (equal to 23.7 mpg US), CO2 emissions are 231 grams per kilometre.
BMW’s first full-hybrid is able to run on electric power alone up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph, that is without the slightest emission of CO2. The combustion engine cuts in automatically whenever required.
The two-mode active transmission serves to enhance the level of efficiency and driving dynamics by providing the ideal combination in each case of the two drive systems. Incorporating the two electric motors, three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches, the two-mode active transmission conveys the power of the drive system in the same way and with the same qualities as a seven-speed automatic transmission, intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology, in turn, spreading out power variably between the front and rear wheels.
BMW sets a new course with an innovative vehicle concept at the NAIAS 2010. Opening up a new segment never seen before, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines the essential features of a prestige Sedan, a modern Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo with one another. Stylish and elegant in its looks, this unprecedented four-door comes with frameless windows and a two-piece tailgate. The generous interior offers luxurious comfort, a slightly higher seating position for comfortable access and a superior overview of traffic conditions as well as a truly impressive range of variability.
Powerful but efficient engines, eight-speed automatic transmission featured as standard, Dynamic Driving Control also coming as standard, the most advanced suspension technology and innovative driver assistance systems interact with one another in the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo to ensure a truly unique driving experience. The 550i Gran Turismo, for example, is powered by a V8 featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo and High Precision Injection for maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp. The BMW 535i Gran Turismo, in turn, comes with a newly developed straight-six for the first time combining a turbocharger, direct gasoline injection, and fully variable VALVETRONIC valve management. Displacing 3.0 litres, the BMW TwinPower Turbo delivers maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp. And thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, both versions of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo offer a level of fuel economy and emission management simply outstanding in this segment and with this kind of performance.
The BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance technology offers yet another opportunity to enjoy Sheer Driving Pleasure at a low level of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
Featuring the BMW 335d Sedan and the BMW X5 xDrive35d as special variants of the six-cylinder diesel, BMW is focusing specifically on the challenges of the North American automobile market and is therefore promoting this drive technology in continuing its worldwide entry into the marketplace. Developing maximum output of 265 hp, the power unit featuring Variable Twin Turbo Technology and common-rail direct fuel injection also offers an unprecedented cruising range on the road. And equipped with a diesel particulates filter, an oxidation catalyst, and SCR Selective Catalytic Reduction to reduce the level of nitric oxides (NOX) to a minimum, the new model meets the emission standards now in force even in the strictest States in the USA.
A wide range of options pointing into the future for enjoying Sheer Driving Pleasure of the highest standard – precisely this is the highlight of the model range and other innovations presented by BMW, the German premium car maker, at the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, has raised the technological bar to previously unseen levels. Showcasing new advanced hybrid-drive technology, BMW’s trademark lightweight body construction and an ultra-aerodynamic design, the Vision EfficientDynamics concept delivers M3-rivalling performance with the fuel economy and the low running costs of a small car.
BMW’s latest concept is powered by a new diesel-electric hybrid system, a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine working in tandem with two electric motors. The unique combination allows the Vision EfficientDynamics to accelerate to 60mph in just 4.8 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, while returning a combined consumption of 75.1mpg and emitting a mere 99g/km CO2.
Capable of running on either the electric motors for up to 31 miles or the diesel engine for 400 miles, the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car is also capable of combining both power sources. The onboard management system can utilise the power from all three sources when short bursts of speed are required, such as when overtaking or accelerating from junctions. The resultant design is more than merely efficient; the floating rear LED lights, transparent roof and dramatic glass panel gull wing doors are sure to turn heads.
The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is practical too; those doors allow access to two rear seats, which can be tilted forwards to increase storage space in the boot. A new thermo-electric generator (originally developed for use on spacecraft) situated in the exhaust even creates its own electricity from the car’s exhaust gases to power the air conditioning, electronic seat adjustment and power steering.
Now the discerning customer has the opportunity to enjoy the unique high-performance character of a BMW M car also in the segment of BMW X models: The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the supreme performance, dynamic driving features, athletic design, and premium quality of a typical BMW M Car.
Both models are powered by a newly developed V8 high-performance engine delivering 408 kW/555 hp at an engine speed range between of 6,000 rpm from an engine capacity of 4,395 cc. The new M TwinPower Turbo engine is indeed the world’s first power unit with a common exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders and featuring Twin Scroll Twin Turbo Technology.
BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system is naturally geared to the specific power and performance characteristics of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, just like Dynamic Performance Control also standard on both models. Interacting with the cars’ special M suspension including Adaptive Drive and the newly developed Servotronic power steering, this ensures the driving behaviour so characteristic of a BMW M Car, combining unique driving stability with precisely controlled steering qualities all the way to the highest level of driving dynamics.
The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M set new standards in this segment of high-performance models in terms of acceleration, lateral dynamics, steering behaviour, stopping power, and efficiency. Both models accelerate to 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.7 seconds and stand out not only through the truly impressive delivery of power by the V8 turbo engine providing maximum torque of 680 Newton-metres or 501 lb-ft in the broad speed range between 1,500 and 5, 650 rpm, but also through the likewise smooth and consistent build-up of lateral forces meeting the highest requirements and the most dynamic level of performance in bends.
